Explanation of the wordplay of the title:
"Guid" is Scottish for "good" and looks like "guide."

(Unless you"re Italian-American and saying it friendly, there"s another
word like that I didn"t mean for you to use there--no, no, no.)
"Haven" is a safe shelter or harbor and looks like "heaven."

Personal info: when I play this game, I can"t help but think, "Wouldn"t it be
something if my Mom and Dad were around and I could show this to them?" It"s
sort of like a trip back to when they were young. Not that they were in any-
thing like the Mafia, because they weren"t. So it"s sort of like that. Kind
of. Sort of.

  Running the game on Vista
Vista users who want to make sure that their save games and configurations
show up in the main game folder should read the Microsoft article on "File and
folder Virtualization" at the next link.
  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927387/en-us
It instructs you to go to the C:UsersUser_nameAppDataLocalVirtualStore\r
MyApp folder. But I didn"t have AppData listed there by clicking my way through
the usual way (?). So I put AppData in Start > Start Search and found it.
Then I used the rest of the article directions to go to Virtual Store, but I
didn"t see a MyApp folder--I found two other folders: Program Files and Windows.
The Program Files folder had a folder called Mafia and in it was a text docu-
ment called log.
To have the save game and configuration settings files appear in the proper
place, the article instructs you to change the security settings on the folder
for the application:
   1. Log on as a user who has administrative credentials then go to the game
folder.
   2. Right-click the folder then click Properties.
   3. On the Security tab, click Edit.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type
your password, or click Continue.
   4. Under Group or user names, click your user account.
   5. Under Permissions for Users, click Allow for the following permissions:
          * Modify
          * Read & Execute
          * List Folder Contents
          * Read
          * Write
   6. Click OK
I ran the game as Administrator to use the initial little menu of options and
saved it. I also right clicked the Desktop icon for the game, clicked Proper-
ties, clicked the Compatibility tab, checked the box for "Run this program in
compatibility mode for:" and used the drop down box to pick "Windows XP (Ser-
vice Pack 2)," then clicked OK. Then the game ran normally.

Mouse aim or driveby from a car and other controls
Mouse aim or driveby from a car
You can only use mouse aim, or use mouse aim for a drive by, in the three
"camera" views that position the "camera" above and behind the vehicle. For the
other three "camera" views, the "camera" is in a fixed position.
To have Tommy use mouse aim, not shoot, from a vehicle, use one of the three
"camera" views that position the "camera" above and behind the vehicle and click
the LMB. Revert to the default view by clicking the RMB.
I don"t like looking sideways while trying to drive forward so I generally
didn"t have Tommy do a driveby while having him drive. But this is how you do
it:
To have Tommy shoot from the driver"s seat of a vehicle, use one of the three
"camera" views that position the "camera" above and behind the vehicle, scroll
to the handgun you want to use, and press the LMB--cross hairs appear on the
middle of the screen. You can move the crosshairs with mouse aim. Tommy can
shoot if you aim the crosshairs somewhere to the left of the vehicle.
The same method works for those three "camera" positions if you press the key
to have Tommy look left. You can have Tommy shoot while looking left and using
the other three "camera" positions, too, but the crosshairs can"t be moved from
the center of the screen.
Press the RMB, the key to have Tommy look right, or both of the keys to look
backward, and he reverts to Empty Hands--if the vehicle has a window, he closes
the window.
Tommy can use a handgun, machine gun, or shotgun from the passenger side such
as when using the gimmick to have Tommy driven in Sam"s car in "Just for Relaxa-
tion-The Trap" or be driven in the Trautenberg Model J in "Moonlighting-Lucas
Bertone 2."

  Save games
You get two save games for "Freeride Extreme," one for "Freeride," and one for
each saved section of a main story mission. The most you can have is 116 save
games.
When you run the cursor over a save game, you can see Tommy"s Health for it
from 0-100%, the date and military time of the save, and play time, which I
think is is the amount of time you played an uninterrupted session till when you
saved that mission.

  Screenshots and videos
The Prt Scr (Print Screen) key doesn"t work for making screenshots for Mafia.
(By that method, you"d then open Paint and click Edit and Paste then Save the
screen shot.)
You can use Fraps to make screenshots and videos of your games.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraps
  http://www.fraps.com/
Fraps lets you use hotkeys. You can take any number of screen shots at a
time, but the free version doesn"t let you make make .jpg files, only .bmp
files which are a lot bigger. To copy them as .jpg files, you can use the free
Easy Graphic Converter, then delete the .bmp files.
  http://www.etrusoft.com/graphic-converter/
The free version of Fraps restricts videos to 30 sec. clips. Whether you use
the free version or not, the videos take up a lot of MBs which you can compress
to take up less hard disk space (and make them easier for your computer to use
with your editor later). The free processing tool I use is VirtualDub. I click
Video > Compression > XviD MPEG-4 codec and save them as .avi files.
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub

  How I make videos
As described above, I capture the scenes on my PC with Fraps. I use Virtual-
Dub, which is free, to compress the video clips to .avi files.
Other free software I"ve used includes the AoA Audio extractor (to extract
the audio from a clip or convert MP3s to .wav files, which Windows Movie Maker
prefers), Super (to convert most any file type to another), and Wavepad (an au-
dio editor I haven"t used much). I"ve also used the ZAMZAR web page to save
YouTube videos.

I edit the clips with Windows Movie Maker, which comes with Windows Home XP
and Vista Home Premium. Windows 7 comes with Windows Live Movie Maker, which
has different functions, but you can unofficially port Windows Movie Maker to
it. I use Windows Movie Maker to publish each video to my computer, which lets
you compress the video to the size you want. See the Windows Movie Maker forum
for more, including many free user-made effects.

  HUD and map

  HUD
Tommy"s Health, 0 (death) to 100, is shown in a rectangle at the lower left
corner of the screen.
If Tommy holds a gun, an ammo rectangle appears to the right of the Health
rectangle. The ammo rectangle shows Tommy"s ammo by a pair of numbers. The
left number of the pair gives the number of bullets in his current cylinder/mag-
azine/cartridge and the right number gives the number of bullets in his unused
cylinder/magazine/cartridge.
An exclamation point appears over the Health rectangle if Tommy can interact
with something by pressing the RMB. Other status messages may appear there,
too, such as a rectangle that shows the Health, 0 to 100, of a mission compan-
ion, red letters indicating what kind of offense Tommy is wanted for, etc.
When Tommy enters a car to drive it, the name of the car appears briefly in
the bottom left corner of the screen.

  Radar
The radar is in the upper left corner of the screen when Tommy is in the driv-
er"s seat of a vehicle. The types of vehicles in Tommy"s area are represented
on it with different colored short lines.
White (shown in the center of the radar):
            Tommy in a vehicle
White (shown anywhere on the radar):
An unlocked vehicle: one of Tommy"s other vehicles or that Tommy
            hasn"t found yet in "Freeride"
  Green A locked ped vehicle
Blue A police car that isn"t chasing Tommy. A police car will react to
an offense by Tommy if it"s anywhere from about halfway between the
edge of the radar and the middle of it and approaching the middle--
Tommy"s position. They won"t react to an offense by Tommy if
            they"re driving away from him.
  Orange ("Freeride"):
A gangster car that isn"t chasing Tommy
Red A police or gangster car that"s chasing Tommy

  Yellow A trolley
Red X (blue X on the map):
Tommy"s current destination or target vehicle
During "Fairplay-Victory," the radar also shows a basic outline of the nearby
part of the racetrack.

The speedometer, gas gauge, odometer, tachometer, indication of manual or
automatic transmission, and, when shown, the speed limiter are shown at the bot-
tom right corner of the screen when Tommy is in the driver"s seat of a vehicle.
The currently selected gear is shown above the base of the speedometer needle.
Below the base of the needle of the speedometer is an odometer, which shows the
distance the vehicle has traveled. The gas gauge is on the bottom of the speed-
ometer. The gas level will go down fast if the engine is damaged. A little
round red light appears if the tank is about empty or empty.
The smaller dial to the left of the speedometer is a tachometer, which you can
use if using a manual transmission. It shows the rate of rotation of the engine
crankshaft in revolutions per minute.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachometer
The tachometer is used to know when to shift. See the instructions for how to
shift with a manual transmission at the next links.

  http://www.10w40.com/individual/100186.asp
  http://www.ehow.com/video_3234_drive-car-with.html
The little round dial to the right of the bottom of the speedometer shows an
"M" or "A" to indicate whether the car is using a manual or automatic transmis-
sion.
As the game manual notes: "...by pressing the clutch and revving the engine
you can achieve a faster getaway from a stationary position.
"NOTE: By switching to manual control of the gears you have the option to
leave it in neutral with the handbrake off, this is shown in the gear display
window in the center of the speedometer by the letter "N". This can allow vehi-
cles to be moved without any resistance."
If you press F5 to limit the speed of the vehicle to 40 mph (60 mph after com-
pleting the main story missions), a yellow-orange diamond with "40" ("60" after
completing the main story missions) in black numerals appears above the right
side of the speedometer. Press F5 again to remove the speed limit and the indi-
cator.

  Compass
The compass appears at the upper left side of the radar to point at Tommy"s
destination (not the nearest road to take for the best route) when a mission as-
signs one.

  Pocket watch
When Tommy has a timed mission, a pocket watch appears in the upper right cor-
ner of the screen to indicate the time left in the mission. For periods over
one minute, the time left in shown by a moving minute hand with the distance it
has to travel to 0 colored with a diminishing red slice except that the last
minute is shown instead by a moving second hand and the distance it has to trav-
el to 0 colored by a diminishing red slice. Just the latter is shown for periods
under a minute.

The amount of money Tommy has is shown in "Freeride" in the upper right corner
of the screen.

  Map (Tab)
Yellow arrow (shown in the center of the map)

  Blue X
Tommy"s destination when assigned by a mission
Also shown on the map are Salieri"s Bar, Lucas Bertone"s auto service shop,
gas stations (three orange triangles), elevated railway and stations (blue),
and trolley routes (yellow).

****

  Police
The police wear blue uniforms and hats (except for undercover policemen in
long light brown coats who only appear in certain main story missions).
They don"t appear in the country in "Freeride." If you try to have Tommy lure
them there, they disappear when the country setting loads.
(The Mafia bought all the farms and killed them. There are dead bodies in ce-
ment under a patch of turnips. Some are afraid of the country in "San Andreas."
Why? At least you can lure the police there. There are no police in the coun-
try in "Freeride" in "Mafia." If you go there late at night, you may see the
ghost of Al Capone raking his mulch.)
If Tommy"s offense is seen by a policeman who"s on foot, you"ll hear a whis-
tle. If his offense is seen by policemen who are in a vehicle, you"ll hear a
siren.
The police on foot or in a police car only react to Tommy committing an of-
fense if they"re pointed or going toward him. They don"t react to an offense by
Tommy while they"re pointed or driving away from him.
To help Tommy prevent a policeman from seeing Tommy commit an offense while
he"s on foot, you can have him look around the scenary for a police man or a po-
lice car that"s pointed or coming toward him. He can also do that while he
picks (RMB) the lock of a vehicle.
To help Tommy prevent a policeman from seeing Tommy commit an offense while
he"s in a vehicle, you can try to avoid having Tommy commit an offense when a
blue line, indicating a police car, is anywhere from about half-way between the
edge of the radar and the middle of it and is pointed toward or approaching the
middle--Tommy"s position. The police don"t react to an offense by Tommy while
they"re pointed away or driving away from him.
The radar doesn"t indicate policemen who"re on foot. If Tommy"s in a vehicle,
you can either have him check out the scenary for police on foot by turning the
vehicle or by clicking the LMB and looking around with mouse aim if you"re using
one of the "camera" views that positions the "Camera" above and behind the vehi-
cle.
You can also press F5 to limit the speed of Tommy"s vehicle to 40 mph (60 mph
after completing the main story missions) so he doesn"t go over the speed limit.

  Minor offenses
  - Going more than 40 mph (60 mph after completing the main story missions) but
not more than 70 mph (105 mph after completing the main story missions)
  - Going through an intersection despite a red light
  - Using a vehicle to lightly to moderately bump a pedestrian or another vehi-
    cle
If you have Tommy commit a minor offense and he"s seen by a policeman, a tick-
et icon appears in the top middle section of the screen indicating that the po-
liceman is trying to serve Tommy a ticket.
If the policemen are in a police car, they chase and ram his vehicle.
If you have Tommy stop and get out of his vehicle to pay the policeman the
fine for the ticket during the main missions, it just adds to the appearance of
realism of the game--he doesn"t have money for you to manage. But if Tommy pays
for a ticket during "Freeride," he loses $1,000.
In the main story missions or "Freeride," if the ticket icon remains opaque
for a longer period of time, or if Tommy gets four tickets in a row, he"s wanted
for arrest--a major offense.

  Major offenses
  - Going more than 70 mph (105 mph after completing the main story missions)
  - Showing a weapon except the Baseball bat
  - Being seen by a policeman after a minor offense for a longer period of time
  - Committing a minor offense for the fourth time
  - Using a vehicle to slam into another vehicle or kill a pedestrian
  - Lightly to moderately bumping a police car--slamming into a police car may
be a major offense or create police assault
If you have Tommy stop and get out of his vehicle to pay a traffic ticket
while transporting someone that openly carries a weapon other than the Baseball
bat, they get out of the car while Tommy does but the police don"t mind that the
passenger is carrying a weapon.
If a policeman sees Tommy commit a major offense, a pair of handcuffs icon ap-
pears in the top middle section of the screen indicating that the policeman is
trying to arrest Tommy. If they"re in a vehicle, they"ll ram Tommy"s vehicle.
As with a minor offense, you can have Tommy get out of the policeman"s view
and the icon becomes translucent. If you have him get into another vehicle
without a policeman seeing him do it, the icon changes to the puzzled policeman
(see below).
If a major offense status persists for a longer period of time, other police-
men are called into the hunt and a wanted bar (see below) appears below the pair
of handcuffs icon.
If Tommy is apprehended while sought by the police for a major offense, he"s
arrested and you fail the mission.

  Police assault
  - Firing a weapon
  - Attacking or killing a policeman
  - Slamming into a police car may be a major offense or create police assault
If a policeman sees Tommy commit one of these offenses or hears him fire a
weapon, a Colt 1911 icon appears in the top middle section of the screen indi-
cating that the police force, including officers on foot with S&W Model 10 M&Ps
and police cars containing officers with S&W Model 10 M&Ps and Pump-action shot-</span><span id="faqspan-2">
guns, is trying to shoot Tommy.
If this status persists for a longer period of time, other policemen are
called into the hunt and a wanted bar (see below) appears below the Colt 1911
icon. If Tommy tries to escape, roadblocks with two to five cars, armed police-
men, and one or two spike strips appear at every couple of intersections.
If you have him get into another vehicle without a policeman seeing him do it,
the icon changes to the puzzled policeman (see below).
If Tommy is killed you fail the mission.

  Puzzled policeman and wanted bar
  Puzzled policeman
If Tommy has gotten into a different vehicle after getting out of the sight of
the police after a policeman saw Tommy create one of the offenses of the several
categories above, the icon in the top middle section of the screen changes to
the head and upper body of a policeman with three question marks by his head.
If Tommy gets out of the vehicle in view of a policeman, his previous wanted
status is reinstated.

  Wanted bar
If Tommy is wanted for a longer period of time for a major offense or an of-
fense that creates a police assault, a red bar appears below the pair of hand-
cuffs or Colt 1911 icon. More policemen join in the hunt as described in each
of those categories above.
If Tommy gets out of the view of all of the policemen, the icon becomes trans-
lucent and the red bar slowly gets smaller till the icon and the bar are gone.
If Tommy is seen by a policeman before the bar disappears, the icon becomes
opaque and the red bar becomes full again.
If Tommy gets into another vehicle without being seen by a policeman, the puz-
zled policeman icon replaces the pair of handcuffs or Colt 1911 icon.

Eluding policemen who are on foot
Most carry an S&W Model 10 M&P. They blow a whistle and chase Tommy if they
see him commit an offense. If Tommy has a wanted rating, it will get worse if
you have Tommy stay around them too long without doing something to end his
wanted status.
Since Tommy may be able to run away from some of them, you could have him
shoot any policemen that are close then run or jack a vehicle to get a couple
blocks away and out of their view, go around a corner, and jack a vehicle to
make the puzzled policeman icon appear.
If a trolley is handy, you can have Tommy ride on it because the police don"t
enter a trolley. You might get away with having Tommy go up a ramp to wait for
an elevated train and use it likewise because the police don"t ride one of those
either and may take a while before making it up the ramp. That may even give
you an advantage in being able to have Tommy shoot them.
The fastest thing to do is have Tommy shoot them. If there"s no other police-
man around and there isn"t a wanted bar, and Tommy isn"t killed, the wanted icon
will disappear once the officer is dead.
To have Tommy shoot more rapidly, notably with a Pump-action shotgun, hold
down the key for Backward then hold down the key for Fire as well and he can
fire as quickly as you can add presses of the Jump key.
If Tommy is in a vehicle when he creates a minor offense and you want him to
elude a policeman that"s on foot, you can just have Tommy keep driving. Once
Tommy"s gotten out of the sight of the policeman, The ticket becomes translu-
cent. When the ticket disappears, it indicates that the policeman has given up
the chase.
To make a more serious wanted rating disappear, you could have Tommy run over
the police man, or get a good distance away and turn the left side of his vehi-
cle toward the police man then do a driveby (scroll to a handgun then click the
LMB), but it would be easier to have Tommy get out of the vehicle to shoot them.

Eluding policemen who are in a car
Policemen in cars appear in pairs. Early in the main story missions they ap-
pear in a Schubert Six Police, later a Schubert Extra Six Police Fordor or Schu-
bert Extra Six Police Tudor. They"re armed with S&W Model 10 M&P handguns and
the officer in the passenger seat may have a Pump-action shotgun. From "Elec-
tion Campaign" on they respond to police assault with a pair of officers with
Pump-action shotguns in a Lassiter V16 Police car. Tommy is better prepared to
handle them if he gets some distance from the shotguns and uses a Thompson 1928
or at least a Colt 1911.
If Tommy"s on foot when policemen in a car come after him, have him wait till
the car is stopped nearby and the policemen begin to get out of their car. Have
Tommy shoot the officer that comes out of the facing door and hasn"t had time to
shoot, then have Tommy crouch and move to bring the other officer comes into
view and shoot him.
If Tommy"s position relative to the car makes it convenient, such as if Tommy
is facing the side of the car and can shoot across or through the windows of the
car, or he"s far enough away from the front or back to get a clear shot at the
area by each of the two doors, you may be able to have Tommy stay in one area
and shoot one officer then the other as they get out of their car and haven"t
had time to shoot.
If Tommy"s close to the police car, the officer who comes out of the passenger
side with the Pump-action shotgun is the bigger concern. If Tommy"s position
makes it convenient, have him shoot that officer as he comes out of the car and
hasn"t had time to shoot. Otherwise, have Tommy shoot the driver as he gets out
of the car, then have Tommy take cover or keep enough distance so the Pump-ac-
tion shotgun isn"t as effective and shoot the officer who has the shotgun.
If Tommy is in a vehicle that"s pursued by policemen who are in a vehicle,
they"ll ram his vehicle with theirs and try to run him off the road. Have him
drive to nearly miss things with the left side of his car to cause the police
car to run into something and be stopped, have Tommy get out of his vehicle to
get them to come out of their vehicle, then use the methods used when Tommy"s on
foot described above to shoot them.
(Thanks to Bloviator"s research on police for some of the information in the
section above.)
  http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/371671/37141

You might plan ahead and have Tommy place a vehicle out of the sight of the
police, such as in an alley, then have Tommy use another vehicle to commit the
offense nearby. If you"re used to Grand Theft Auto, you might consider that
like having a vehicle in a nearby Pay "n" Spray, ready to take away a wanted
rating when your lead character gets into the vehicle, before having your lead
player get a wanted rating. Then keep Tommy in the vehicle that"s in a se-
cluded place until the wanted rating disappears, and it will disappear whether
the police on foot or in a car see him or not.

At the next link, codebusters has Tommy"s car lightly bump a police car to
create a minor offense, elude them till the ticket symbol is replaced by the
puzzled policeman symbol, get out of his car, and run about 20" behind his car.
When the police car catches up, it parks, and while the police get out and run
to Tommy"s car, Codebusters has Tommy run to the police car, pick the lock, and
steal it. Then codebusters parks with the driver"s side door against a wall,
and the two policemen takes turns throwing each other out of the passenger side
before codebusters has Tommy drive away with a policeman in the passenger seat.

  Vehicles
  Obtaining Cars
Much of the following information is from the Lost Heaven Courier in the game
manual.
Tommy is provided with a Falconer Yellowcar, a taxi, at the start of the main
story missions and the start of "Freeride."
For most of the main story missions, Tommy is provided with a car, and a les-
son in how to steal it, from Ralph, the Salieri family"s mechanic. Most main
story missions also contain an option to do a favor for Lucas Bertone of Lucas
Bertone"s auto service shop--see the Map (Tab). He shows his gratitude for fa-
vors done by showing Tommy how to steal a car and where he can steal another
example of the same car.
When Ralph or Lucas Bertone show Tommy how to steal a make and model of car,
Tommy learns how to jack or pick the lock of that model and sometimes other mod-
els of the same make. As the years go by during the course of the game, more
modern and powerful cars become available.
As the main story missions are completed and vehicles are unlocked that way,
more vehicles become available for "Freeride."
Tommy is rewarded with a special vehicle, not seen driven by predestrians, for
succeeding at each mission of "Freeride Extreme," which is available by either
completing all the main story missions or trying to open a secret door (see the
section on "Freeride Extreme"). Once Tommy is rewarded with a "Freeride Ex-
treme" vehicle, that vehicle (in one case it and several other vehicles) then
becomes available for "Freeride."
The main story mission vehicles can also be made available for FR by having
Tommy try to open a secret door--see the section on "Freeride."

Car Theft Rises to all time high!
To have Tommy steal a vehicle, have him stand next to the driver"s door and
hold down the right mouse button. The time it takes to unlock a vehicle depends
on the make and model. A progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen--when
it"s full, the vehicle is unlocked. If you release the right mouse button while
Tommy tries to pick the lock of a car, he stops and the progress bar is emptied.
Once the door is unlocked, press the RMB and Tommy will get into the driver"s
seat.
It"s also possible for Tommy to carjack vehicles that are being driven on the
streets by the citizens of Lost Heaven once they"re stopped. If the vehicle
isn"t stopped by a traffic light or traffic jam or such, it will stop if Tommy
stands in its path for at least a couple of moments (if there isn"t that much
time, the vehicle will hit him and he"ll be injured or killed).
To have Tommy jack it, have him go to the driver"s door and press the RMB--
Tommy opens the driver"s door and throws out the driver. (You can also have
Tommy use this method at passenger doors to throw out passengers, such as for a
Taxi fare he wants to get rid of.) Press the RMB again while he"s by the driv-
er"s door and he gets in the driver"s seat.

You will only be able to jack or pick the lock of a vehicle in the main story
missions if the game has made the vehicle available (Falconer Yellowcar), or
Ralph or Lucas has previously shown Tommy how to steal a particular make and
model making it, possibly other vehicles of that make, available, or you type
the code "cornufse" to let Tommy jack or pick the lock of any vehicle.
Tommy will only be able to jack or pick the lock of a vehicle in "Freeride" if
the game has made the vehicle available (Falconer Yellowcar), or the vehicle has
been made available by doing main story missions, or if you have Tommy try to
open a secret door (see the section on "Freeride"), or you type the code
"cornufse" to let Tommy jack or pick the lock of any vehicle.
Tommy can jack or pick the lock of any vehicle in "Freeride Extreme" except
for vehicles that he can be rewarded with for succeeding at FRE missions, which
he either can"t use or doesn"t need to steal. That"s because, aside from making
FRE available with the secret door gimmick, FRE becomes available by completing
the main story missions, so FRE counts it as though you made all the vehicles
available that can be made available by doing the main story missions.
NOTE: Stealing cars is an offence, so be aware of patrolling police nearby.
(See the section on "Police.")
Some drivers will not be happy when Tommy tries to steal their vehicle and may
retaliate by punching. In a minority of cases, the driver has a weapon. If so,
it"s either a Baseball bat or a Colt Detective Special, the worst handgun of the
game.

  Ralph"s Garage
Vehicles that you have been provided with by Ralph or have stolen during the
course of the game will be parked in the "Garage," which is actually the lot or
garage, behind the Salieri Bar at the start of a mission. The vehicles that
will be stored are those from Ralph (even if they are discarded in the city dur-
